Nokia E61i

It's been over a year since we look at Nokia's first batch of E series business phones calculated for mobile professions. The Editors' Choice prized E61 was also the Finnish phone giant's first BlackBerry nominee, a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard and push e-mail in a packed in PDA form-factor.

Design

Nokia has made subtle design changes to the E61i, enhancing the back with a sturdier aluminium case and changing the all-silver design by introducing "mocha" (purpley-brown) highlights around the edges. Although it's quite wide -- its dimensions are 117mm by 70mm by 13.9mm -- it's comfortable to hold in your palm and thin enough to slip into a pocket.

Features

Aside from the addition of a 2-megapixel camera, Nokia's upped the battery life to 400 hours of standby and nine hours of talk.
Connectivity options are still extensive, with the E61i supporting quad-band GSM network and 3G -- huge for travellers -- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and for a few reasons that escape us, infrared.
Corporate mobile e-mail solution such as Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email, good quality Mobile Messaging, Mail for swap, Seven Mobile Mail and BlackBerry Connect to turn the E61i in to a push e-mail device are support. There's too the video camera, a music player and a video player for a small piece of fun.
Quick office and Adobe Acrobat booklover are onboard for viewing and editing papers, and Nokia also include an application called Teams that lets you set up groups of associates for conference calls and group messaging.
Unfortunately USB connections still need a proprietary Nokia Pop-Port rope no borrowing someone's spare mini-USB cable if it goes absent.
Nokia's changed from miniSD on the E61i to the lesser microSD memory format on the E61i, with a 256MB card bundle with our review model. It's hot-swappable once you take out the battery cover.

Though it is sold by Nokia flagship food, the Nokia USA web site and by importers not closed for use with any GSM carrier. We chosen up ours from phonesource-usa.com and conventional the Hong Kong version of the phone in two days. Should you pick up an Asian replica, have no fear: it's a bilingual phone so you can set it to English (unless you prefer cut down Chinese). On the number pad, the numbers 1 through 5 each have one Chinese caress, but these aren't distracting. The phone does support prognostic text in English as well. The Nokia is available in three dye combination: silver gray / deep coveted (which we received), frost white / metallic red and frost white / mocha. The coveted and mocha colors are compound, looking nearly dark gray to black with tinny highlights in darker location but turning much more vibrant under direct light.
